Alert. Contact Your Member of Congress Now. Transgender-inclusive Federal Hate Crime Law to be Voted on Today.

In a sudden and surprising development, Congressman John Conyers will offer the provisions of TRANSGENDER-INCLUSIVE HR 2662, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crime Prevention Act, as an amendment to HR 3132, the Children’s Safety Act of 2005, TODAY. It will be numbered as Amendment No. 25.

Consideration of HR 3132 will begin at approximately 1PM Eastern Time.

We ask that you please contact your member of the U.S. House of Representatives and ask them “to support Mr. Conyers Hate Crime Amendment #25 to the Children’s Safety Act that will be brought forward today.” There is no reason to go into too much detail about how bad hate crimes are, only that you strongly support the amendment. To call your representative, call the Congressional Switchboard at 202-224-3121, tell them your zip code and they will connect you. Or you can find your member of Congress and their contact phone number, go to Visit Legislators

Important Note: The bill to which these amendments are being attached is not a bill that NCTE supports for various privacy and social justice reasons. It appears, however, to be a bill that will easily pass the House. Regardless of how bad the underlying bill is and whether it becomes law, this is a great opportunity to have a first-ever positive vote on a transgender-inclusive hate crime bill.

We will track developments and pass on additional information as known.
