Cancer’s A Drag

TCPalm Entertainment – Carol Saunders

Surprises ? there were many April 5, when Connor Moran Children’s Cancer Foundation hosted its first “Cancer’s A Drag” night of comedy and colorful entertainment at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre.

The first big surprise came when guests entered the lobby and were greeted by the hostesses ? two strapping, six-foot-tall muscular men in evening attire, high-heels, wigs and full make up. Dressed in drag, they are better known as female impersonators or cross-dressers who flitted around the cocktail reception/silent auction, seated people in the theater for the show, tossed long-stem roses to the audience during intermission, and generally added to the fun, tongue-in-cheek atmosphere to the evening.

The gals (?) were “Britania” (Bob Fortney) and “Bonnie-Jean” (David Lyon) and they set the mood for the evening which included WPTV News Channel 5 Meteorologist Rob Lopicola, who did a fine job as emcee; head-liner, stand-up comedian Derek Richards, a cancer survivor; and female impersonator comic “Miss Stevie d” (Steve D’Oiveira), who lost a sister to cancer; along with four other male entertainers, dressed as women, who performed lip-sync to several popular musical numbers.
