Our NEW Site Design!

Updated on 9/3/08...

As most of you know by now, we've been working hard over the last few months on a New Site Design for URNotAlone. The main reason for this Rewrite and Redesign is to make URNotAlone more Standards Compliant so that it will work properly with more Browsers and more Versions of Browsers than it has in the past. As many of you found, back in April, we actually broke URNotAlone with Internet Explorer (IE) 6. We're happy to report that it works just fine now. We've tested with IE 6 and 7, Firefox 2 and 3, Safari 3 and even with the Beta version of Google's Chrome and they're all working fine.

We switched over to the New Design around 5pm Eastern Time on September 1st. Most things are in place, however there are still some bugs that are cropping up and that will be worked on over the next several days and there are also a few features that aren't quite working properly yet, but we're close. Any errors you encounter or behavior that you find that's out of the ordinary you should Report to us via the Support Link at the bottom of the pages.

The New Design is much Slimmer and Faster. It's also easier to navigate, and, as we've mentioned, it's much more Standards Compliant, so fewer people should experience problems when using URNotAlone.

We hope you like the New Site and we really do value your input. Give us until the end of the week to fix the bugs and finish getting features that aren't quite working yet, working... after that, if you see something you don't like, something you think is broken or something that you think can be improved, send us a note and be as detailed and specific as possible. A general statement like "I don't like it" is not going to be helpful, so don't bother, but suggestions on how we can change it to make it better will be helpful to us.

We'd like to thank you for your patience as we've worked on this over the last several months and for your continued patience as the kinks are worked out. We expect and hope that the majority of people will be happy with what we've released:)

End of Update...

As most of you are aware by now, we are working hard on a new design for URNotAlone! I'm happy to announce that we are making lots of progress (this is pretty much the only thing I'm doing right now).

I'm not a web designer. I've never claimed to be, but I do the best I can. Sometimes though, you have to shell out some cash for some expertise. Jon and I decided that it was time. My last site update broke the site for users of IE 6. (oops)

Our new design is much slimmer and faster. It's also easier to navigate. Our web designer is really good, and fortunately, he's very patient with this old programmer.

We hope that you like it, but we value your input. We've already hear that people don't like their main profile photo being so small (however, keep in mind that clicking on it enlarges it), but we want to know what else you think.

You can check out the new design at http://urnotalone2.com/main.php. Keep in mind that it's still a Work In Progress and by no means completed yet. Also, keep in mind that if you click on any of the links on the Main page, chances are it'll bring you to a section that hasn't been completed yet, so for now, just have a look at the Main Page and Individual Profile Pages to get an idea of the new look and feel that's coming to URNA.

If you'd like to get an idea of what your profile will look when the new design is rolled out, just use urnotalone2.com as the domain in place of urnotalone.com in your current profile link. For example, to see what Vicky's new profile would look like you'd type in http://profiles.urnotalone2.com/1. Note that the only change is that urnotalone.com becomes urnotalone2.com.

That's it for now. Our goal is to have the new site online by the end of August, it's taking a bit longer than we had hoped to rework all the various sections of the site to fit into the new design...

  • Dan™ 9/29/2008 07:01 Actually Leia. The design was worked on by a professional designer. Almost everythin is now only three clicks away from the main page. The google ads have to be prominent as they generate revenue to support the site. I see you did buy a subscription, and that helps, but not enough people do, so we need to supplement our income. The profile photo issue is on my list of things to do but there are issues. As for the icons, we'll never make everyone happy. Overall though, the new sites is a HUGE improvement over the tangled mess that was the old site.
  • Leia May-yin Chen 9/29/2008 03:03 Hello Jon, I do miss the old layout. It appears you have redesigned the site for cross platform compliance and speed over userabilty and aesthetics. For a web site that caters to a clientele where value is beauty and how one is presented, I believe it can be better. It looks like a business page with Google ads very much in prominence. The main profile picture is way too small, and profile items such as IM and personal web page/contact information are dispersed all over and confusing to find. The menu icons could use some letters as they are not the most logical (unless you mouse over).
